Mrs. Angie Miller’s Honors English 2 class was assigned to read Our Town by Thornton Wilder.  The American play, set in Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire, is a story about small town life and the romance between Emily Webb and George Gibbs.  In the play the citizens of Grover’s Corner create a time capsule so that future citizens could have a look into how past citizens of the town once lived.

As a part of their unit of study, the class was instructed to create a time capsule much like the townspeople did in the story.  The students decorated their boxes with materials that reflected who they are.  Each box included ten items that meant something to the student. Items included such things as athletic equipment, air pods, pet toys, pictures, and other items that represented their hobbies and interests.  For each of the items selected, there had to be a typed explanation telling why the item was selected for the time-capsule.  The students then had to present their capsule to the class.

The project allowed the students to relate to the townspeople of Grover’s Corner by creating a time-capsule.  The students were able to express who they are by putting things in their box that have meaning in their life.  This project was a great way to start out the school year.
