Two friends, Sam Wasson and Mattox Elrod, have grown up playing football together for
the past ten years. From the playground to the playing field, these two athletes have shared a
love for the game. Regardless of position, both have always given it their all. This year, Sam
Wasson was set to be the starting quarterback, while Mattox Elrod would play as wide receiver.
On August 14th, Sam suffered a hip injury while playing against Bulloch Academy, causing
Mattox to step up as the quarterback for the remainder of the game.
Since that game, Mattox has assumed the role of quarterback for the team. Both athletes
have taken this unexpected change in stride. According to Sam, “You still have to lead, even
when you are not participating.” He continues to lead the team by encouraging teammates,
giving advice to players, and helping in any way possible.
Even through this trying time, Sam Wasson and Mattox Elrod have relied on their faith.
Sam states that this circumstance did not catch God by surprise, “I just know that God has got it
in His hands, and His plans are better than anything.” Mattox shared the same sentiment that he
prays often, gives it to God, and tries to go out and do the best he can for his team. Sam and
Mattox agreed that this change affected more than just the two of them. “With Mattox coming
in, playing a new role, everyone has had to switch. They’ve had to switch positions, and I’ve
learned resilience from them (the team).”
These two athletes and the team plan to continue to play hard each game, making the
most of their time on the field. Mattox Elrod and Sam Wasson both expressed their excitement
and hope for the 2026 football season.
