Abigail Tucker Attends NSLC at Harvard University

By:  Leah Deal, PCA Senior

July 5th through the 13th, Abigail Tucker, a senior at Pinewood Christian Academy, attended the National Student Leadership Conference at Harvard University Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts. Students from all around the world gathered together to attend the conference focused on the field of Psychology and Neuroscience where they explored the relationships between human behavior and the brain.

Various workshops delved into aspects of both the loss and recovery of one’s memories, the neurological impact of drugs, and how brain scans are used to diagnose psychological disorders. Tucker participated in a series of hands-on simulations including a dissection that examined the optic nerve and how the eye itself makes connections and sends signals to the brain. Other simulations included the examination of an animal brain to better understand the basic anatomy of a human brain. These activities not only built on the students’ understanding of the focus, but also assisted in building leadership and teamwork skills for future success.

Within the psychology scope of the conference, Tucker attended lectures that included topics about child psychology, drug abuse in relation to one’s mental state, different areas of psychosis, and various aspects of neuroscience. She also participated in clinical psychology simulations where students explored such areas as social psychology, theories of personality, abnormal psychology, as well as stress, coping and emotion. Within these simulations, she had the opportunity to take part in diagnosing patients, suggesting treatment plans, and experiencing a dyadic encounter exercise.

The conference also included tours of Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard University, Cambridge, and Quincy Market where students enjoyed an assortment of music, food, and shopping.

“This experience was so unlike anything I had ever done before,” Abigail shared, “I learned so much about my passion for psychology and gained a deeper understanding about what it means to be a young leader in today’s world. I met so many amazing, like-minded people that I know will go on to do amazing things for themselves and others. NSLC changed my life this summer, and that is something I will cherish forever.”
