PCA Upset in Last Second 27-29 Loss

On September 10, Pinewood Christian Academy battled strong against the Augusta Prep Cavaliers, but the Patriots lost a heartbreaker with a close score of 27-29.
First Quarter
The Cavaliers ran for a touchdown on their second play of the game, but Augusta Prep was called back on a flag thrown for holding.
Shortly after, the Cavaliers scored a TD and the point after was kicked through the uprights, making the score 0-7.
Pinewood’s John Marshall Headrick recovered the kick and gained a PCA a first down. Jeffrey Young completed pass to Kaleb Shuman who earned another Patriot first down.
Augusta Prep intercepted the ball before PCA could make it to the end zone. K. Shuman completed a great tackle against the Cavaliers. The Cavaliers scored their second TD of the game, but did not gain the point after which made the score 13-0.
Wade Durrence recovered the kickoff, and a flag was thrown on the play. Young threw a pass to Cameron Dutton, gaining a PCA first down.
Second Quarter
Dutton had another complete pass from Young which gained a first down. Shuman put the Patriots on the 2-yard line after another hard run.
Garlon Rogers ran for a Patriot first down on the 1-yard line. PCA scored their first TD with a strong run by G. Rogers. Caleb Conley kicked the ball through the uprights, making the score 7-13.
Sky Rogers, Sam Glisson, Collin Woolard, and Matthew Floyd all led the defense with powerful tackles several times.
A flag on the play backed the Cavaliers up 5 yards. Our defense fired up, and Matthew Floyd stopped the Augusta Prep runner from gaining a TD. The Cavaliers remained determined and ran again to score another TD. The point after was incomplete which made the score 7-19.
Young then completed several passes, gaining yards for the Patriots.
Third Quarter
G. Rogers began the third quarter with a powerful run.
Jake Woolard intercepted the ball from Augusta Prep. A flag for a personal foul on the Cavaliers moved PCA up 15 yards. Young threw the ball to Parks Hagan for another Patriot TD. The kick was good. Score, 14-19.
Chap Shuman had a strong tackle on the kick return. Grady Skeens sacked the Augusta Prep ball carrier. Ford Thompson forced the runner out of bounds. Floyd, C. Woolard, and G. Rogers had strong tackles for PCA. A flag was thrown for a penalty on holding against Augusta Prep. Floyd tackled the Cavaliers on their 13-yard line.
The Cavaliers moved up 5 yards because of a penalty on Pinewood. Quincy Tanner and Wes Purcell held their defensive ground and tackled Augusta Prep’s offensive line.
The Cavaliers scored a TD and kicked the ball through the uprights, making the score 14-26.
Young completed a pass to J. Woolard for a Patriot first down. PCA fumbled the ball and Augusta Prep recovered. C. Woolard and Floyd continued to give it their all by making solid tackles against the Cavaliers. Floyd made the tackle causing a second down for the Cavaliers as the timer ran off the clock.
Fourth Quarter
A penalty was called on Augusta Prep for delay of game. After the fourth down, PCA regained possession of the ball.
G. Rogers had an extravagant carry for the Patriots which gained a first down to start off the fourth quarter. Young completed a pass to Dutton for another first down. Thompson caught a pass from Young with a loss of 3 yards. He was forced out of bounds. Another pass was completed to Hagan which earned another Patriot first down.
Augusta Prep sacked Pinewood’s quarterback causing an incomplete pass. Young recovered by throwing a completed pass to J. Woolard for a Patriot first down.
Thompson gained yardage for the Patriots with another complete pass from Young. The Patriots continued to push forward with Dutton making it across the goal line for a Patriot TD. The point after was kicked through the uprights by Conley which made the score 21-26.
Floyd and Thompson made superior tackles against the Cavaliers. Augusta Prep was backed up 10 yards for a penalty.
Dutton, Purcell, and Tanner had strong tackles for PCA. Skeens had a quarterback sack against the Augusta Prep Cavaliers. K. Shuman forced Augusta Prep out of bounds for the fourth down.
With only two minutes remaining, PCA scored a first down. K. Shuman had another powerful carry. Young carried the ball gaining yards for a PCA second down.
K. Shuman then earned another first down for the Patriots. A flag for a personal foul against the Cavaliers moved Pinewood up 15 yards. James Rogers put Pinewood in the lead by one point after scoring a TD.
PCA attempted the 2-point conversion but were not successful making the score 27-26.
Floyd and J. Woolard overpowered Augusta Prep with several hard tackles. Augusta Prep was on the 17-yard-line with only 15 seconds on the clock. Pinewood’s defensive line held the Cavaliers as hard as they could, but they were not able to block the field goal. With 1.1 seconds on the clock, the score became 27-29. Augusta Prep won the battle.
