Each year, the Bellville Lions Club, led by Mr. Mark Anners and Mrs. Emily Groover, invite students ages eleven and twelve to participate in the Lions Club International Peace Poster Competition. The Lions Club International is a civic organization that serves their local community in many ways including sight conservation and youth outreach.

The theme for this year’s competition is ” A Celebration of Peace.”  Students at Pinewood Christian Academy work on their projects in art class each week under art teacher, Mrs. Mondie Gagliardo, with about five weeks to complete them. They must represent the contest’s theme graphically and are not allowed to use any words on their posters.

Mrs. Gagliardo sent the students’ posters to the Bellville Lions club where they were judged by the Lions Club members, and the winning two posters were chosen. This year’s winners and their families, along with Mrs. Gagliardo, were invited to the Lions Club meeting at the Belleville United Methodist church on November 21, where they were each awarded their prizes.

Julia Hethcox, PCA sixth grader and daughter of Chad and Angela Hethcox of Claxton, was awarded first place, and Mary Lucy Dasher, PCA sixth grader and daughter of Jacob and Toni Dasher of Glennville, won second place. Both girls were given monetary prizes. Their winning posters have been sent to the international competition where they will hopefully win a prize.

Pinewood students have participated in this competition for the last nine years, and PCA hopes to continue to be a part of the competition for years to come.

Congratulations to each of the girls on their great accomplishment and good luck in the international competition!
