PCA Sophomores Present Gods and Goddesses Project

By: Brayden Gravley
Many books that students study during their high school careers contain allusions to Greek mythology. Mrs. Angie Miller, the Honors English teacher at Pinewood Christian Academy, realizes the importance of these references and assigns a project to her class of sophomores each year.
Students in Mrs. Miller’s classes were split into groups and were given several gods and goddesses of Greek mythology to study. Each member of the group chose a being and wrote an essay. In each individual essay, they included details such as: important characteristics, what they are the god or goddess of, associations with them, and their Greek and Roman names. These students proved just how many companies, products, and expressions are based off of these myths. The next part of this project was to create six pieces of artwork between these god and goddess. Three of these art pieces were full-body, poster-sized drawings, another two had to be small business cards, and the sixth was a postcard. The posters were decorated with colorful symbols and other things that represent the deity. The business cards could be anything ranging from Zeus’s Power Supply to Poseidon’s Luxury Beach Resort and the postcard could be a lovely painting of Iris at the end of the rainbow.
With all of these creative factors, these students learned about Greek mythology in a way they never have before by observing visuals and listening to presentations given by their own classmates. Students were only supposed to give a five minute oral presentation, but it’s hard to put a time limit on the fun of everyone wearing togas and talking about their art.
