PCA Sophomores Learn About World War Two

By Sydney Strickland, PCA sophomore

On May 7th, Pinewood Christian Academy’s 10th grade class took a field trip to the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum in Pooler. The students went on a tour around the museum where they learned about the different types of planes and bombers used in the war and the lives of the men operating the planes. The 10th graders also participated in a scavenger hunt around the museum, where they learned about different battles, prisoners of war, and the daily lives of the soldiers. After the students ate lunch, they got to explore more of the museum and the memorial gardens outside. The students also took part in The Poppy Project, a special tribute to the 26,000 plus men in the Eighth Air Force who gave their lives protecting our country during World War Two, by creating a poppy out of felt or paper to place in the museum.

Following the trip to the Mighty Eighth, the students were visited by someone who experienced life on the home front during the war. On May 8th, Buford Brannen, grandmother of sophomore Anabelle Brannen of Register, recalled memories of life during World War Two when she was a little girl and brought many artifacts and books from the war to share with the class. Mr. L. W. Bush also spoke about his uncle who served in the war and many of his heroic deeds. The 10th graders enjoyed experiencing these World War Two activities and learning about the war in a fun, interactive way.
