PCA Follows the “Orange Brick Road” to Homecoming
By Brayden Gravley, PCA sophomore, and Sydney Strickland, PCA junior
Pinewood Christian Academy celebrated their annual Homecoming week in a fun, new way with a Wizard of Oz theme. Homecoming was also filled with exciting activities such as the pep rally, senior breakfast, tailgate supper, the Pinewood vs. Frederica Academy Homecoming football game, the announcing of the Homecoming Princess, and the crowning of the 2018 Homecoming Queen.
On Monday, PCA students stormed the halls during “Color Day”, where each grade level was assigned a specific color to wear.
On Tuesday, the students were suddenly blown into a twister and dropped into different decades! Each student picked their own decade to wear clothes from. Whether it be hair from the 80’s or flowers from the 60’s, every student was decked out in past, present, and future attire.
On Wednesday, groups of two or more students coordinated outfits for Twin Day. From football players to boxes of crayons, all of the students and faculty had a blast trying to discover “which witch was which.”
“Lions, Tigers, and Patriots! Oh my!” On Thursday, PCA gave the old tradition of Camo Day a new twist. Students dressed either in camo or dressed up as an animal. There were deer, chickens, and lions to name a few. During the early morning hours before school, the seniors gathered together in the parking lot to cook for their senior breakfast.
Friday, students showed off their school spirit by decking themselves out in orange, green, and white. The morning began with the Senior Spirit Parade, where the seniors decorated ATVs and drove around the school while parents, students and patrons lined the road to cheer them on.
After homeroom, Cheerleader Hush Day began. Each varsity cheerleader wore a nametag and was not allowed to talk for the whole day. If a cheerleader talked, the person who caught them talking took their nametag and got to pie them in the face during the pep rally. The varsity cheerleaders sold spirit items such as pom poms, spiky orange hair, and beaded necklaces. They also painted the lower school students’ faces and gave them temporary tattoos.
At the end of the day, the cheerleaders hosted the annual homecoming pep rally. The varsity football team entered in high-fiving the students getting them pumped up for their football game against FA, the cheerleaders performed dance routine, students from the audience competed in a “stuff the scarecrow” game, and then the prestigious spirit sticks were awarded to the loudest grades. The pep rally concluded with the cheerleaders being pied in the face and the traditional singing of the Alma mater.
Before the game started, PCA alumni, students and patrons enjoyed the fifth annual homecoming tailgate dinner catered by Rusty Pig.
Before kickoff, senior representatives were presented as they rode down the sidelines in convertibles. Following the presentation of the seniors, each grade level class representative walked onto the field to be presented as well. Vying for the crown this year were seniors Madison Davis, Tinsley McCall, Jordan Jernigan, and Bailey Oliver. Lower class representatives included Madeline Deal (11th), Abi Oates (11th), Madison Shaffer (11th), Carson Rountree (10th), Payton Rogers (10th), Julie Collins (9th), Julia Hethcox (8th), and Harleigh Driggers (7th).
During the half-time show, the representatives were escorted onto the field. The flower girl and crown bearer, first graders Ruth Rogers and Chi Sittle, came onto the field carrying flowers for the Queen and Princess along with the Homecoming Queen’s crown. The 2017 Homecoming Queen, Milligan Williams, attended the game to crown the new queen.
Tinsley McCall, the daughter of Van McCall of Reidsville and Sarah Beverley of Collins was named this year’s Homecoming Princess.
Jordan Jernigan, the daughter of Shawn and Jenny Jernigan of Claxton, was crowned as the 2018 Pinewood Christian Academy Homecoming Queen.
The festivities came to an end with a homecoming dance hosted by the senior class immediately following the game. The night was filled with music, dancing, and fun and was the perfect way to conclude this week of Patriot pride.
