By:  PCA Journalism Students

Homecoming week at Pinewood Christian Academy was yet another week of lifetime memories made as students and faculty participated in themed dress-up days, a senior breakfast, the senior spirit parade, pep rally, annual tailgate supper, football game, crowning of the Homecoming Queen, and school dance.

Monday, September 19th, Pinewood Christian Academy kicked off annual Homecoming week festivities with Hawaiian/Crazy Tourist day!  Students and teachers showed their spirit by dressing up in Hawaiian themed clothes and crazy tourist attire.  The halls were filled with grass skirts, straw hats, colorful Hawaiian shirts, and much more.  It was a great way to begin a week full of fun and spirit.

On Tuesday, PCA’s homecoming theme was movie/TV character day.  Students dressed up as a character from their favorite movie or TV show.  The halls were full of characters such as Forest Gump, Nemo and Dory, and Minnie and Mickey Mouse among several more.  Many of the outfits were very creatively designed by the students and faculty themselves.

It’s not too often that you get to live in the past.  On Wednesday, Pinewood’s homecoming theme was “Decade Day.” Students across the school dressed in outfits reflecting fashion ranging anywhere from the 20’s to the 2000’s. There were poodle skirts, flared jeans, teased hair, and pretty much anything you could possibly imagine. Junior, Olivia Cousson, commented, “It was super fun because we got to experience a different decade.”  Everyone enjoyed this “groovy” day!  Students talked about how they enjoyed this day “because we looked like our parents/grandparents in the past.”  Pinewood’s decade day was a success and the majority of the school participated, even the teachers!

Thursday, PCA had camo day which allowed the students to wear anything camo.  The day began with a cookout in the parking lot for the seniors.  The seniors arrived at the school around 6:30 that morning.  The senior boys came in early to cook breakfast including bacon, chicken wings, deer steaks, and sausage.  Donuts and sausage rolls were brought in and the girls also brought other refreshments.

The morning began as the seniors gathered at the varsity baseball field at 7am to decorate their cars and load up for the beloved tradition of the senior spirit parade.  The parade started from the lot across from the Varsity baseball field, and we drove throughout the parking lot while the underclassmen and faculty watched and took pictures.  It has always been a great way to show spirit for the big homecoming game later that night.

After homeroom, “Cheerleader Hush Day” began.  The cheerleaders were not allowed to talk to anyone except for other cheerleaders or their teachers. If they talked to someone, they have to give up their name tag to the person who heard them talk.  Those that won the name tags got to participate in a game with the cheerleaders at the pep rally. As the day continued, the varsity cheerleaders sold various spirit items such as toy footballs, foam fingers, colorful necklaces, and pom poms. The cheerleaders also painted the kids faces and gave them temporary tattoos of their choice. This has always been a fun way for the kids to show their school spirit.

At the end of the school day, the cheerleaders hosted a pep rally for the entire school. During the pep rally, the cheerleaders pumped everyone up to prepare them for Friday night’s game against EBA.  The football players ran through a sign made by the cheerleaders into the gym and high-fived the lower school kids to excite them and they loved it.  After the football players were welcomed into the gym, the cheerleaders performed their competition routine for the first time.

The cheerleaders then chose specific teachers and students to participate in a “riff off” game.  During this game, one of the cheerleaders would use a microphone and divide everyone up into teams.  Once the teams were picked, the cheerleader with the microphone would say a word, and each group had to sing a different song that included their given word in the lyrics.  If a team could not think of a song fast enough, they would have to sit out.  The last team standing were the winners.

Next was time for the hush badge relay which was played as a type of relay.  Following the games, the cheerleaders performed their “fight song” dance for everyone.  Mrs. Paula Bush pumped everyone up one last time for the game and closed the pep rally in singing the Alma Mater.

Later in the afternoon from 5:30 to 7, the third annual Homecoming tailgate supper became the scene for PCA patrons, alumni, and students to enjoy some bar-b-que.  The supper was catered by the Rusty Pig who served over 350 people. Donations were given toward the annual fund by those attending the event.  It was a great time to be had by all!
