Pinewood Teacher, Logan Porter, Selected as the Ivey Center for the Cultural Approach Feature Teacher
Pinewood Christian Academy’s Logan Porter was selected as the Feature Teacher for the Ivey Center for the Cultural Approach at Columbus State University in Columbus, Georgia. Mr. Porter teaches U.S History, AP U.S History, and U.S. Government, and AP U.S. Government at Pinewood, and could not be happier with his job. Mr. Porter quotes Mark Twain, “If you like what you do, you will never work a day in your life.”
Mr. Porter often uses primary sources to relate history to his students. He feels that if they can relate to the person, time period, or event through emotions and their own past experiences, they will learn more. He sees the Cultural Approach as an excellent way to do this. Mr. Porter also uses his personal experiences from visits to historical places to inspire his students. He and Mrs. Miriam Porter, also a Pinewood teacher, will be part of a group of teachers who were selected to participate in the 2015 Ivey Center Field Experience to Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown, VA in December. Both teachers are enthusiastic about the prospects of bringing a fresh excitement to their classrooms from this trip.
The Cultural Approach is a method of teaching that looks at a person or period of history from six different aspects: political, religious, intellectual, aesthetic, social, and economic within the framework of time and place. This approach gives a fuller picture of the period or person that students can relate to instead of a one-sided picture that has no meaning. It brings history to life. Students are flourishing from the use of this approach, and have become much more successful in Mr. Porter’s class.
