PCA Teacher Attends Colloquial Weekends
By: Emma Waters
Logan Porter, history and government teacher at Pinewood Christian Academy (PCA) recently attended two Ashbrook Colloquial Weekend Seminars. These weekend colloquia allow teachers of American History and Government to explore the people and ideas each is asked to teach along with a visit to the historic sites that helped to illuminate the subject. Participation is based on a competitive application process. Participating teachers learn about American history by reading a set of primary source documents, traveling to a relevant historic site, and engaging in conversation with up to 20 colleagues over the course of the weekend.
The conversations are open ended. Teachers are not expected to reach a set conclusion of the material, are not required to take an assessment, and are not asked to complete a lesson plan. Participating teachers are only expected to engage in thoughtful conversation.
The two seminars Mr. Porter attended were “Lyndon B. Johnson and the Vietnam War” in Austin, Texas, and “Presidents and the Constitution: Calvin Coolidge” in Northampton, Massachusetts. Ashbrook Colloquial weekends are sponsored through teaching American history (tah.org) a division of Ashland University, Ashland, Ohio.
