PCA 4th Graders Present Volcano Projects
By: Emiley Phillips, PCA Junior
Pinewood Christian Academy (PCA) 4th grade students have been learning the different ways in which our planet Earth changes in science class. Mrs. Jessica Durrence has been teaching about volcanoes, one of the many changes that occur in/on Earth. To help further understand the science behind how volcanoes erupt, the students were assigned a volcano project. Students constructed their volcanoes by attaching clay and other materials around a small container and placing it on top of either plywood or a box lid. Decorating with trees, rivers, etc. was also encouraged by Mrs. Durrence to add creativity and make it more appealing.
There were two different recipes the students had the option to choose from when creating the actual volcano eruption solution. They could choose between yeast and peroxide or Mentos and diet soda solutions. When presenting their volcanoes, the students had to give a specific overview of how it was made including information such as: how they made it, what they used, who helped them, and if they enjoyed the experiment or not, etc. Students enjoyed getting to use their creative abilities and imaginations to build and construct their own volcano as well as learning along the way how different solutions can “erupt” like actual volcanoes.
