College Fair at PCA

On Thursday, October 27th, Pinewood held our annual college fair. College Fair was started by Mrs. Lou Ann Farrow when she became the counselor at PCA. We have had college fair for over ten years now. Each year a number of colleges are invited to Pinewood to inform students and their families about what their college has to offer them and why they should go there. College representatives also are able to answer any questions that the students have in regards to campus life, applications processes, and scholarship/financial aid opportunities.  College Fair is only open to juniors and seniors currently, but since we’ve had great turn outs almost every year, Mrs. Farrow is open to letting sophomores come to this event to get a peek at what the colleges have to offer as well.

Carol Ann Lott, representative of Georgia Futures, was this year’s key speaker for out event.  She spoke to students about what has changed about the www.gafutures.org website and how to get and keep scholarships. The fair’s participation was great this year; we had a combination of seventeen different colleges and military forces attend and interact with the students. These associations were ABAC, Armstrong University, Brewton Parker College, East Georgia College, Georgia College and State University, Georgia Southern University, Georgia Southwestern University, Kennesaw State, Middle Georgia State University, Ogeechee Technical College, Piedmont College, University of Alabama, University of Georgia, Valdosta State University, Young Harris College, United States Coast Guard, and United States Army.

New this year was a scholarship raffle that each attending student at the fair was allowed to enter for a scholarship worth $500. Students could only enter their name once and had to stay until the winner was announced. All the students had to do to enter was write their name on a piece of paper, fold it, and put it into the drawing bag. At the end of Mrs. Lott’s presentation, she took the bag of names, shuffled them around, and pulled a name out. This year’s winner was Taylor Sapp.

The students had a great time exploring and asking questions about the different colleges and what they had to offer.
