APES Car Pollution Experiment

Mrs. Pollak’s AP environmental science class recently did a project to examine how much pollution our cars give off. She group the students and each group got a sock. The group would decide who’s car to use, and they headed out to the car. The students placed the sock on the exsaust pipe, turned the car on, and left it on there for five minutes. After the experiment was over, the groups compared the socks. They discovered that the newer cars tended to have little to no “black” on them. Trucks and older cars tended to have a great amount of pollution on them. It was a fun opportunity to show the students just how dirty cars can be and better understand the amounts of pollution they cause in our enviornment.
